Former teacher dies

Mr. Robert M. Potchynok, died in a house fire in Royal Oak on Jan. 20, 2008. Mr. Potchynok worked at De La Salle from 1972 through 1995, and taught a variety of Social Studies courses, chaired the Social Studies Department, and served as Coordinator of Academic Affairs. He had just turned 72 (January 9).
Born in Hamtramck, MI, he attended St. Ladislaus Elementary and graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary in 1954. He attended the University of Detroit, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education in 1960. He also received his Master's degree from U. of D. in 1963.
He began his teaching career at Immaculate Conception School; later, he taught Literature and American History at St. Mary's Orchard Lake, where he also held the position of librarian. After retiring from DLS in 1995, he later returned to the classroom from 2003 - 05, at Immaculate Conception, teaching History and Civics.
He had a lifelong passion for learning and education, enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and attended weekly Mass at Marygrove College.
He is survived by his sisters, Arlend Rickord and Nancy sommers, and a brother Gary. He was pre-deceased by his brother Jerome.
