Students in Mrs. Sharlene Kroneck's Mechanical Drawing and Computer Programming classes competed in the first-ever DLS Cardboard Boat Regatta on Sunday, May 31, at the Warren Community Center pool.
Divided into groups of two or three, each group had to research, design, and build a small-scale model of a boat, and then build a full-sized boat out of only cardboard and duct tape. The boat had to transport two students the length of a lap pool lane and back. Boats were powered using a variety of "paddles," including shovels, brooms, cutting boards, and tin pans. There were many different boat designs ranging from canoes to luxury boats.
The skills needed to complete this project included science, math, communication, technology, engineering, and team work.
Of the nine teams, junior Kohl Davila came in first with Mrs. Kroneck riding in the boat at a time of 1:09
David Leduc and Jordan Kaczmarek took second place at 1:39.
