WARREN, Mich. - Looking to get some extra mat time in before this weekend's Norsemen Classic in Grosse Pointe, the De La Salle Collegiate wrestling team made a last-minute trip over to Warren Collegiate to take on the Cougars Wednesday night.
The Pilots looked good, picking up six pins en route to a 54-15 victory. At one point, De La Salle rattled off seven straight wins, outscoring Collegiate 33-0 during the span.
"We wanted to get match time this week and not get another practice in today," DLS head coach Dennis Parks said. "(Collegiate) has some good, athletic kids and they really pushed us right out of the gate. We've wrestled them for I think four years now so it's always good to match up with them."
Freshman Nathan O'Donnell opened the match with a fall over Chantiz Thacker at 112 pounds and Collegiate voided at 119 pounds, staking the Pilots to an early 12-0 lead. After the Cougars' Luke Thompson pinned freshman Dean Oakie at 125, De La Salle freshman Brady Bennie picked up a last-second 11-10 decision over Collegiate's Jelani Larks at 130, scoring on an escape as the clock expired.
Bennie's win wasn't the only exciting victory for the Pilots. Sophomore Dominic Ragona overcame an early, 8-0 deficit, battling his way back for a 9-8 decision over Devon Baker at 160 pounds.
"He caught me off guard. I was thinking too much at the beginning," Ragona said. "I needed to calm down and keep my mind in the match. I knew I still had plenty of time left and I just needed to use my technique and wrestled the way I knew how."
Junior Jeremy Schelosky, freshman Javon Williams, junior Brett Stanley, junior Kenneth Ryder and freshman Gjon Nikollaj all picked up pins for De La Salle (2-1 overall).
