Daniel Barry, former DLS hockey coach, will be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Sept. 17.
Barry coached ice hockey for 25 years, beginning as a varsity assistant at Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett High School from 1991-96.
From 1996-97, he was the varsity assistant coach at Notre Dame Harper Woods. He returned to University Liggett High School as the varsity head coach from 1997-2002, when he was hired as the varsity head coach at Warren De La Salle.
He remained at DLS for the next 14 years where his teams earned four Metro League Conference Championships (one as varsity assistant coach), six MHSAA Regional Championships, two Catholic League Championships (2008, 2010), four Final Four appearances, and two Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Championships.
Barry’s teams accumulated over 300 wins, and while head varsity coach at De La Salle, his career win-loss record was 227-114-10. He was known for his “positive and engaging personality and his overall excellent supervision of the teams under his command,” and earned many honors and recognitions over the years.
He was named the Metro League Coach of the Year three times, the Catholic League Coach of the Year two times, the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association (MHSHCA) Coach of the Year three times, and the MHSAA Coach of the Year. In 2018, Barry had the honor of being inducted into the MHSHCA Hall of Fame.
In addition, he has supported his sport and community through his participation in several associations. He has served as the MHSHCA secretary for two years, second vice president for two years, first vice president for two years, president for two years, and president of the Metro League for one year. He also worked with the Salvation Army for five years, promoting hockey for inner-city kids.
The induction ceremony will take place in the Terrace Room of the Bovee University Center on the campus of Central Michigan University at 1 p.m., Sept. 17. Tickets to attend the event are available on the MHSCA.org website.
The MHSCA is a 67-year-old association with nearly 12,000 members representing 18 sport-related associations was founded on the campus of Central Michigan University in 1954. The Hall of Fame is located in the Student Activities Center
