Cicchini Pegged as Head Coach for New JV Hockey Team.

Ian Cicchini, ’10, who teaches English and serves as the eSports director, will now add a new title to his duties at De La Salle: head coach of the JV Hockey team, which returns to the sports lineup this winter for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

He said he has many hopes for the team in his new role – not only to make them better players – but to make them better overall.

“We will prepare the future varsity Pilots for success on the ice at the next level, while also enforcing important details that will translate to their everyday lives,” Cicchini said. “The greatest thing about sports is that it teaches us so much about life and how to handle adversity.

“If the boys graduate as great men, then we’ve done our job,” he said.

Cicchini said he was drawn to the sport early on, with both his uncles and father having played, “so it just kind of rubbed off on me.”

As a result, he brings decades of experience to the ice. “I first got on skates as early as 2, but I started playing organized hockey when I was around 4 years old out of St. Clair Shores.

"I started out as a left-wing but moved to defenseman when I was about 9 or 10, and the rest is history,” he added.

Sean Clark, DLS varsity hockey head coach, said, “Ian is the perfect choice to lead our JV team, and is someone who bleeds purple and gold. He has been a key piece to the success of our program over the last couple of years.

“Ian has walked in these young men’s shoes, and is extremely relatable to our student-athletes,” Clark said. “I have no doubt he will grow the culture of De La Salle hockey.”

This fall will be Cicchini’s fourth year teaching at DLS. He has also served as the eSports director since 2022 and has been one of the assistant varsity coaches for the hockey team since 2020.

Cicchini plans to continue in his role as an eSports coach, along with help from his assistant coach and director, Kevin Schulz.
