De La Salle, St. Patrick come together for good cause
  • CHICAGO, Ill. - What might have seemed like a holiday getaway turned into much, much more for the De La Salle Collegiate swimmers and divers this past weekend.

Scheduled to swim against St. Patrick in Chicago, coach Jim Singelyn's team learned of a tragic car accident that injured seven Wisconsin high school students - five of which were members of the Wauwatosa East/West co-op swim team. Without giving a second thought, the two schools joined forces to help raise some money to help out. The swimmers and their families raised more than $360.

"St. Pat's is another Christian Brothers' school so it was nice for the boys to meet and compete against kids that are getting the same education," Singelyn said. "The trip as a whole was a nice experience for the boys. I saw a lot of guys hanging out with kids they normally don't hang out with all the time. This is the nice thing about having one team across all four grades."

As for the meet itself, St. Patrick defeated De La Salle, 90-80 at the varsity level, while the Pilot Junior Varsity team got the better of the Shamrocks, 93-72.

Sophomore Max Swiatkowski and junior Juan Dicosmo each won a pair of individual events. Swiatkowski finished first in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.51. He also topped the field in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a time of 56.87. DiCosmo was first in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley.

Freshman Carson Ricker won the 100 breaststroke and was second to DiCosmo in the 200 IM. Sophomore Michael Paluch was runner-up in the 100 breast.

De La Salle's 200 medley relay team of Swiatkowski, Ricker, DiCosmo, and junior John Kafoury, Jr. finished first in a time of 1:52.24.

The Pilots are now off until Jan. 16, when they will host U-D Jesuit, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, and Ann Arbor Greenhills in Catholic League competition.
