WARREN, Mich. - De La Salle Collegiate showed its strength up top, as seven wrestlers brought home medals from the Tom Costello Memorial Tournament Saturday at Warren Lincoln.
Juniors Kenneth Ryder and Brett Stanley each went undefeated on the day, earning championships at 189 and 171 pounds. Ryder won all four of his matches, two by pin and two by technical fall, capping things off with a 17-2 technical fall of Lincoln's Joseph Smith in the 189-pound championship match. Stanley was equally as impressive, pinning his first two opponents in 32 and 42 seconds before defeating St. Clair's John Westfall, 16-1, in the title match at 171 pounds.
Junior Clayton Belleshi finished 3-1 on the day, taking third place after defeating teammate Gjon Nikollaj by fall in the consolation final at 215 pounds. Both wrestlers won their first two matches before falling in the semifinal round.
Also earning medals for the Pilots were sophomore Dominic Ragona (4th place at 160), freshman Nathan O'Donnell (4th at 112), junior Jeremy Schelosky (6th at 135) and Javon Williams (7th at 152), who went 4-1 on the day.
OA Carlson took home the team championship, amassing 282 points. Riverview was second with 241.5, followed by Melvindale (178.5), St. Clair (174.5) and Utica (170.5) in the Top 5. De La Salle finished sixth among 16 teams with 152.5 team points.
