Pilots seeking return trip to tennis state finals

De La Salle Collegiate's 6-2 victory over Grosse Pointe North late last month proved to be vital, as the Pilots garnered top seeds at each of those six flight victories at today's Division 2 regional tennis tournament in Grosse Pointe.

Seeking a third straight trip to the state tournament, the odds will certainly be in its favor. Coach Matt Fisher's team earned top seeds at each of the four singles flights, part of the spoils of sweeping the Norsemen at their most recent meeting.

Robby Shiner, Joe Janusch, Alek Beginin, and Steve Lubera all earned top-line draws, opposite the Norsemen at each singles flight. North is the 2-seed at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, while L'Anse Creuse nabbed a pair of 2-seeds, at Nos. 2 and 4.

Gabriel Kirck and Matthew Zanotti are the top seed at 2-doubles and Luke Boldman and Matthew Kostuch earned the top seed at 4-doubles. Andrew Janusch and Paul Didio will be the 2-seed at No. 1 doubles, while Parker Kuchulan and Deven Sheth enter today's tournament as the 2-seed at No. 3 doubles.

Last year, De La Salle won the regional with 27 points, winning five flight championships. Grosse Pointe North was runner-up with 21.

Singles flights will be played at Liggett, while doubles will be played at Grosse Pointe North High School.
