WARREN, Mich. - Coming as a surprise to no one, juniors Brett Stanley and Kenneth Ryder both won their opening matches - after receiving a bye - and are on to the quarterfinals at the Macomb County Invitational Classic Saturday at Macomb Community College.
Both De La Salle Collegiate wrestlers are the top seeds at their weight class. Stanley pinned Lake Shore's Steven Thompson in a time of 2:43 in his Round of 16 match at 171 pounds. He'll face Anchor Bay's Jacob Biesiada in the quarterfinal round. Ryder rolled past Anchor Bay's Jackson Moceri in his 189-pound second-round match, picking up a 15-0 technical fall. He will take on Cousino's Wyatt Hudson to open up Day 2.
Seven more Pilots are still alive in the tournament and will have a chance in the consolation round. Michael Kafoury (189 pounds), Clayton Beleshi (215), Jeremy Schelosky (135) and Javon Williams (152) all picked up a win, splitting their matches and are still in play. Nathan O'Donnell (112), Fischer Schluessler (145), and Dominic Ragona (152) all received a bye in the consolation round and will take the mats Saturday morning.
Wrestling is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Sports and Expo Center.
Defending champion Warren Woods-Tower sits in first place after Day 1, with 88 points. Dakota is currently second with 83, followed by Lamphere (67), Anchor Bay (61), and Utica (59) in the Top 5. De La Salle has 29 team points, good for a tie for 18th place along with Cousino.
De La Salle's junior varsity wrestlers fared well on Friday. Gavin Urban (215) and Dean Oakie (125) were both 3-0, while Vincent Lertola (171) and Thomas Marsh (189) were each 2-0. All four are in the championship semifinal round.
