WARREN, Mich. - Add Dominic Ragona to the list of De La Salle Collegiate wrestling champions.
The sophomore joined the likes of Kenneth Ryder and Brett Stanley, taking home the 152-pound championship Saturday at the Spartan Classic Invitational at Fitzgerald High School.
"We're very excited for Dom," De La Salle head coach Dennis Parks said. "He was seeded sixth, so he didn't have an easy road to the finals, but he wrestled like he was the No. 1 seed."
Ragona finished 4-0 on the day, capping off his run with a 4-2 sudden victory win over Lakeview's Pierce Ratliff in the championship match. He had earlier wins over Cousino's Logan Forsythe, Brighton's Austin Courneya and Troy's Brendan Worton. It is his first high school tournament championship.
As a team, De La Salle placed seventh among the 23 participating teams - finishing with 92.5 points. Grand Blanc topped the field with 201 points, followed by Brighton (141.5), Chippewa Valley (135.5), Romeo (133), Troy (120) and Port Huron Northern (98).
Ryder and Stanley also took home championships for the Pilots. Ryder pinned his way to the 189-pound title, sticking Roseville's Robert Brandon in 3:44 in his final match. He is a perfect 13-0 this season with titles at the Tom Costello Memorial, Macomb County and Spartan Classic tournaments.
Stanley breezed through to the 171-pound final, winning his first two matches by pin and technical fall. He then defeated Chippewa Valley's Vaughn Petty in the championship match, 1-0. Stanley improved to 11-1 on the season.
Also placing for the Pilots was freshman Gjon Nikollaj (215), who took home fifth place after finishing 2-1 on the day. Senior Michael Kafoury was 2-2 at 189 pounds and junior Jeremy Schelosky and freshman Nathan O'Donnell each finished with a win on the day.
De La Salle will compete at the Norsemen Classic Saturday at Grosse Pointe North.
