WARREN, Mich. (Nov. 30, 2018) – The Detroit Free Press has announced its nominees for the second annual Free Press Sports Awards, and two seniors from De La Salle Collegiate made the list.
Senior defensive back Josh DeBerry and senior midfielder Rocco Galati are player of the year nominees for football and soccer, respectively.
The Free Press Sports Awards recognizes and honors the top athletic accomplishments in Metro Detroit high school sports. The event will take place June 6 at The Fillmore Detroit.
The show features various awards, contests and a special appearance from a celebrity guest, who will be announced later. A red carpet event will open the show at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony will begin promptly at 7 p.m.
One of state’s top defensive backs, DeBerry started all 14 games for the Pilots this season, collecting 44 total tackles and five interceptions. He was also a key contributor to the offensive and special teams as a receiver and kick returner, compiling 1,318 all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns.
Galati helped De La Salle reach the Division 1 state semifinals by scoring 12 goals with nine assists this season.
The Free Press plans to also honor team state champions, including the Pilots, who captured their second straight Division 2 state football championship during Thanksgiving weekend.
Last year, Bryce Bush, who was drafted in June by the Chicago White Sox, was named the prep baseball player of the year. He was among four Pilots nominated for the newspaper’s inaugural awards, including Anthony Comito (golf), Zach Milke (swimming) and swim coach Jim Singelyn (Inspiration Award).
