LAKE ORION, Mich. – More than 160 golfers enjoyed the second annual Christian Brothers Classic, in honor of the late Ed Martel, at Indianwood Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Originally scheduled in June, the event was canceled due to limitations imposed by COVID-19. In an effort to keep the annual event alive, the golf classic was resurrected following all pandemic guidelines established by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The event was organized by Dennis Koch ’94, director of Alumni Relations and assistant varsity golf coach; and Brendan Johnson ’15, associate director of Alumni Relations; and varsity golf coach Doug McKay. In addition, Martel’s widow, Julie Martel, and current parents Mike Jolet, Shanon McKay, Niki Sancimino, Christine Quitter, and Christian Financial Credit Union representatives helped with the event.

“It was a tremendous day for De La Salle,” Koch said. “I really think our golfers had a great day here at Indianwood. We are very lucky for the support of all our sponsors, our alumni, current parents, and friends of De La Salle.”

This year’s recipient of the Ed Martel Award was posthumously presented to Dan Marsh ’80, an active member of the alumni association, who most notably served as a board member of the Pilot Bar Association. Marsh’s widow, Liz, and their children accepted the award on his behalf. Martel graduated in 1987.

Two winning teams prevailed representing the Old Course and the New Course, respectively. The Old Course winners were the team of Brad Sabo ’03, Adrian Sabo ’00, Jonnie Facciolla ’01, and John Perillo. The New Course winners were the team of Greg Aliotta ’15, Ray Skowronski ’15, Cameron Jacques ’14, and Joe Mastej ’15.

The outing would not be possible without the support of the committee and sponsors. HealthQuest, the event’s title sponsor, headlined a great group of supporters including Christian Financial Credit Union, TopCat Sales, EA Graphics, Center for Orthopedic Surgery, Christian Brothers Auxiliary, Patrick Studios, Kanga Roof, Salus Group, and Brew Detroit.
