Singelyn, '90, Eager to Begin His Next Chapter

Jim Singelyn, ’90, longtime swim coach and teacher at De La Salle Collegiate, is leaving behind countless memories as he looks ahead to a new journey.

After more than 30 years of coaching swimming and teaching in the classroom, Singelyn is beginning his next chapter as the city planner in Key West, Fla. With a smile, he added, “My immediate plans are to work on my tan, go fishing, play golf, and chill.”

During his career, Singelyn developed generations of student-athletes. Over a 15-year stretch, he coached more than 100 All-State athletes, 15 of whom earned All-American honors. His teams captured seven Macomb County championships; in 2016, he was named Michigan High School Coach of the Year.

His accolades include being a two-time CHSL Coach of the Year, three-time Macomb County Coach of the Year, and induction into the De La Salle Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

Despite the awards, what Singelyn says he will miss most are his students. He added that his fondest memory is the time he spent in conversation with Bro. Pat McNally, FSC, outside the school chapel.

As he looks forward to life in Key West, Singelyn hopes to reunite with former athletes and students — and extends an open invitation for them to visit him down south.
