Academic Spotlight: Joshua Weiss

Congratulations to Joshua Weiss, accepted at eight universities, and with academic scholarship offers of nearly $500,000.

Josh has decided to attend Michigan State University, and would like to major in Psychology. “I’ve always wanted to go to MSU since I was younger. A lot of my friends are also going there.”

His acceptances include Albion College, Arizona State University, Ave Maria University, Butler University, Loyola University (Chicago), the University of Colorado (Boulder), and the University of Oregon.

Josh traces his interest in Psychology to his class with former DLS faculty member Mr. Jay Ritchie.

With an impressive cumulative GPA of 4.217, Josh is ranked 11th in the Class of 2022. He is taking three Advanced Placement courses this year: Computer Science Calculus AB, and English Language and Composition.

Josh is a member of the National Honor Society and the Link Crew. He also plays lacrosse.

Notably, Josh will always have the distinction of being the first “Captain Spirit,” wearing a new multi-piece costume, including boots and gloves.

In August 2021, Kevin Fitzhenry, Director of Marketing, asked the Link Crew students if anyone would be willing to wear the costume for freshman orientation. Josh volunteered.

“I was originally going to have auditions for students once school started,” Fitzhenry said. “But Josh enjoyed being Captain Spirit, and said he would like to do it for the rest of the year. He has demonstrated great enthusiasm, and has set a high bar for future Captain Spirits.”

Weiss has been present for various events beyond the athletic arena, such as Open House and promotional marketing photos.

“I’ve had a good time being Captain Spirit,” Josh said. “It’s exposed me to a lot of new people. I got to be front and center, and I’ve had a good time. And I am thinking of applying to be Sparty at MSU.”

Josh’s favorite class at DLS is Psychology, and his favorite teacher is Mrs. Ann Marie Michol.

His favorite memory of DLS is Spirit Week of freshman year. “It was just a completely new experience,” Josh said.

Josh attended St. Anne Grade School in Warren, and attending DLS “was the next step.” Josh explained, “Of all the Catholic high schools in the area, DLS best suited me.”

Josh lives in Warren with his parents Matthew and Jennifer Weiss, and his young brother Andrew, a current sophomore at DLS.

The family is involved in St. Mark’s Parish, in Warren.
