Academic Spotlight: Stavro Kiryakoza

Congratulations to senior Stavro Kiryakoza, who is headed to Oakland University with a hefty academic scholarship.

Stavro also applied and received substantial academic offers from the University of Detroit-Mercy and Wayne State University. His offers total just under $220,000.

His cumulative GPA is 3.891.

Stavro plans to commute to Oakland because he likes the campus and it is close to home. He cites his junior year IB Business class for his interest in majoring in Business.

“I enjoyed learning about business, and we got really in-depth about business-type ideas,” Stavro said.

His classes this year include Advanced Placement Statistics and Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles.

Stavro says Mr. Thaier Mukhtar is his favorite teacher. “Mr. Mukhtar really got me and my classmates ready for what to expect in college.”

Outside of the classroom, Stavro is an extremely active student. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Link Crew, and serves as Secretary of the Middle Eastern Club.

Additionally, he has been in varsity soccer, varsity basketball, and varsity track and field. Stavro says his favorite memory at DLS is the basketball team making it to the Breslin Center at Michigan State University his junior year (DLS was in the final four of the 2021 Class A MHSAA basketball playoffs).

Stavro attended St. Anne Grade School in Warren; he decided to attend DLS after visiting for the day in eighth grade. “When I visited, it felt like home. You create a brotherhood once you step foot in here."

Stavro lives in Sterling Heights with his parents Daher and Majwa Kiryakoza. The family attends Holy Martyrs Chaldean Catholic Church in Sterling Heights.
