Class of 2023 Valedictorian, Salutatorian Named

Congratulations to senior Mason Collins, named the Class of 2023 Valedictorian, and George Gardey, named the Class of 2023 Salutatorian. 

"Earning the distinction of valedictorian or salutatorian is not just about achieving the highest grades, but also about embodying the qualities of a leader, a critical thinker, and a compassionate human being," said Larry Rancilio '86, DLS President. "Those titles are a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and determination, and an inspiration to all who strive to reach their full potential. Both Mason and George exemplify all these qualities and more."

"Both Mason and George are the epitome of the best that DLS has to offer,” said Assistant Principal Chris Dean. “These young men succeeded at the highest level despite the challenges and interruptions of the COVID era. They embodied the school's legacy of excellence during a time of great uncertainty. They are leaders inside and outside the classroom and champions on the field. We couldn’t ask for two better representatives for the Class of 2023." 

The current DLS Student Council President, Collins has led his class academically since his freshman year. . 

A member of the DLS National Honor Society, Collins has been an active student outside of the classroom, with participation in football, wrestling, and baseball. 

He chose to attend De La Salle after playing youth football with the Eastside Eagles. He attended Carter Middle School, and lives in Warren with his parents Michael and Bobbi. The family belongs to St. Malachy’s in Sterling Heights.

George Gardey attended St. Paul on the Lake in Grosse Pointe Farms, his home city. 

An accomplished musician - he plays piano at St. Paul’s Masses, Gardey is an active student. He is President of the Law Club, the Student Lead on the DECA team, Secretary of the National Honor Society, and a Student Council Senator. He is a Link Crew leader and also played football. 

Gardey is headed to the University of Notre Dame, where he plans to major in Finance. He chose Notre Dame as “it is the most prestigious Catholic university with strong academics and a fantastic student life."
