De La Salle Collegiate Athletic Department to Provide Strength and Performance Training

Warren, Mich. -- The De La Salle Collegiate athletic department is proud to announce that it is offering athletic training, starting on November 29th. It will provide De La Salle’s student-athletes with the opportunity to gain strength, speed, agility and mobility. From 2:45 p.m. – 5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, this training will be available to athletes in every single sport.

The training is focused on developing a complete athlete, an athlete that can compete at the highest level and year-round in multiple sports.

"Not only are these athletes given a great opportunity to become the most explosive and injury-averse athletes they can be, but they also are building incredible habits and discipline that will carry on as they continue to grow into young men," De La Salle Director of Strength and Performance Tyler Alwardt said. "It has been very exciting to see all of the coaches and athletes taking advantage of this opportunity provided by the DLS athletic department."

On Mondays and Wednesdays, athletes will focus on core lifts, such as squats, bench pressing and hang cleans, as well as speed and agility. The focus for the core lifts will not be on how much weight is lifted, but instead on progressively getting stronger by performing the proper technique. A foundation will be built by teaching proper form and using a three-phase program to progressively get stronger. Once the athlete is “in season," he will lift higher weight in lower reps to maintain the strength he has gained.

Speed and agility drills, meanwhile, will teach functional movements to instill proper running form and to help our athletes become more explosive and agile. The student-athletes will also learn how to move in an injury preventative way in order to stay on the field and/or court.

On Thursdays, our Pilots will lift weights, focusing on stabilization and isolation. There will also be yoga training led by coach Alex Idziak. Idziak is a well-renowned yoga instructor across the country, and she specializes in yoga designed for athletic performance. She will help the school's student-athletes gain and maintain mobility. Additionally, she will continue to build and promote injury prevention for our Pilots, so that they can remain on the field and/or court.

The overall goal of the De La Salle strength and performance program is to build the most explosive and injury-averse athletes.
