The DLS Varsity Golf team participated in the April 28, 2023 invitational Corporal B Tournament at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, MI, on a course designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.
The American Dunes Golf Club was founded to honor military veterans and raises funds to support disabled veterans and their families.
The course has tributes to our fallen heroes from the bag drop area to the clubhouse, and all throughout the course.
Each year, the 14 teams that were part of the MHSAA Boys’ Golf finals are invited, along with four at-large teams.
De La Salle was asked if we could share a story about any of our alumni and provided information about Lt. Robert Poxon, ‘65, a Medal of Honor recipient. Lt. Poxon is also featured in the De La Salle Commons as part of the alumni Military Veterans Wall created to honor our alumni who have given service to any of the military branches.
Varsity Golf Head Coach Doug McKay, himself a veteran, was impressed by the experience.
“The Corporal B tournament at American Dunes was one of the finest tournaments DLS Golf has ever been invited to,” McKay said. “You got the sense the second you entered the facility from the parking lot that this was going to be something special and it was. From the start with the playing of The Star Spangled Banner and then Taps at 1 p.m. with 13 chimes and a minute of silence was an experience that we have never experienced before. The golf course, the head pro, his staff, and all the volunteers made our time unforgettable.”
The DLS Varsity Golfers, led by sophomore Max Teschendorf with a 74, finished 9th of 18 teams. Other golfers included Collin Urbas, Troy Nguyen, Joey Finazzo, and Colton Fuqua.
“It’s not about the golf,” said Alumni Director Dennis Koch, who also serves as the varsity assistant. Koch added, “Today our golf team is honoring our school, our alumni who have served, and all military veterans and their families.”
