Congratulations to De La Salle CollegiateMmathematics teacher Kathleen Erickson, selected by her peers as the school’s Teacher of the Year.

Erickson first joined the De La Salle faculty in 2005 and taught through the 2009-10 school year before taking time away to raise her twin sons, Kevin and Liam. She returned to the school in 2014 and has continued teaching mathematics since then.

A graduate of University of Notre Dame, Erickson earned an undergraduate degree in Finance and later completed a Master’s degree in Education. She met her husband, Paul, while taking Master’s classes at Notre Dame.

At De La Salle, Erickson has taught a variety of Mathematics courses ranging from Algebra to Precalculus. This past year, she primarily taught Geometry and Honors Precalculus.

Erickson said she did not originally plan on becoming a teacher. As a Finance major with a Math minor, she expected to pursue a career in finance after college. Instead, she joined the Alliance for Catholic Education program, which placed teachers in Catholic schools in southern states where there was a need for educators. During the summer program, she earned her Master’s degree in Education and discovered a passion for teaching.

“What was going to be temporary turned into something I really loved,” Erickson said.

Erickson and her family live in Royal Oak and are members of National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica.
