Freshmen Progress Measured with Standardized STAR Test

All De La Salle Collegiate freshmen (Class of 2029), took the STAR test in early January 2026.

The computer-based STAR test, from the Renaissance Company, is used throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The test consisted of two 30-minute sessions, testing reading and math skills.

The STAR Tests quickly measure students' academic progress in reading and math, adjusting difficulty in real-time to pinpoint learning levels and provide data for personalized instruction.

Mr. Andrew Campbell, Director of Counseling, said De La Salle uses the STAR test to benchmark students in reading and math, and also used for curriculum evaluation.

“The tool provides us the opportunity to continue to track learning through their 9th grade year in core subject areas,” Campbell said. “It is a great way for our teachers to get an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our freshmen student population and how to adjust curriculum or instruction to meet their needs.”

In April 2026, all freshmen and sophomores will be taking the PSAT test

All juniors take the PSAT/NMSQT test in October each year; those test results are used to determine students who are named for consideration to the National Merit Scholarship competition.
