NHS Students Tutoring at Local Elementaries

While several De La Salle Collegiate students regularly tutor their peers, a large group of current and potential National Honor Society members are now tutoring students at four local grade schools.

The schools include St. Mary’s (Mount Clemens), St. Anne (Warren), Warren Woods Christian School (Warren), Green Elementary School (Roseville), and St. Joan of Arc (St. Clair Shores).

Faculty member Mr. Ben Westphal, DLS ‘16, moderator of the National Honor Society, said, “DLS wants to help our surrounding schools. This is part of our mission and Lasallian values.”

Westphal noted that NHS students had worked with Walton Academy in Pontiac a few years ago, engaged in after-school virtual tutoring

“It was extremely successful,” he said.

Westphal realized during the summer (2024) that there limited tutoring opportunities available at De La Salle for the members of the National Honor Society (NHS), which requires tutoring as part of the application process.

He reached out to local schools and had a strong response.

“DLS has such strong, academically-driven students,” Westphal said. “Why not utilize their talents to assist local elementary school students?”

Nearly three dozen Pilots are tutoring first through eighth-graders in math, reading, English, and science. The tutoring sessions include studying for tests and quizzes, completing homework, and working on enrichment work.

The virtual tutoring sessions are completed over Google Meet or Zoom, before or after school, as well as during the DLS lunchtime “Power Hour.”

Each Tuesday, senior Anthony Cooper heads to St. Anne’s in Warren and tutors an eighth grader in Pre-Algebra.

“I know the family, and the student plans to come to DLS next fall,” Anthony said. “I wanted to help him have an easier transition and want him to succeed.”

On Thursdays, sophomores Jackson Pertot and Sam Bowab are tutoring a Warren Woods Christian students

“It’s fun to tutor and help kids out,” Jackson said.

Sam echoed that sentiment. “It’s fun. I like helping someone who’s younger.”
