Parent Newsletter, Issue 4

The Pilot Pride Parent Newsletter is produced for the parents and friends of De La Salle Collegiate. The news and notes are compiled by the school’s faculty and staff, and emailed each week during the school year.
 
THIS WEEK AT THE COLLEGIATE
Congratulations are in order for seniors Jarod Amparo and Justin Desmet who were recently named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the National Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented to these scholastically-talented seniors by De La Salle principal Nate Maus. … About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their academic promise this month. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students place among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.


OTHER SCHOOL NEWS
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES: The annual Conferences are scheduled for Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A Sign-Up Genius will be made available soon for parents to sign up for time slots to meet with teachers and counselors.

PSAT/NMSQT: This year’s test day is scheduled for Oct. 16. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be completing these standardized tests beginning at 8 a.m. 

WHO IS AT RISK OF EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS ILLNESS? People who engage in outdoor work and recreational activities in endemic areas are at increased risk of infection. Persons over age 50 and under age 15 seem to be at greatest risk for developing severe disease when infected with EEE. Overall, only about 4-5% of human EEE infections result in EEE illness. CHRISTIAN SERVICE
RECEIVING SACRAMENTS: Are you interested in your son receiving any of the sacraments? Please have him see his Theology teacher or the Campus Ministry office to sign up.

CLOTHING DRIVE The Catholic High School League is sponsoring a competitive clothing drive between Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese. A storage container will be parked at De La Salle on Sept. 30 through Oct. 4 for your donations of clothes.

CBA/MOMS CLUB: Check your mailbox this week for the official Craft Show Book and Order Form. Deadline to order pierogi, fresh greenery, and pies is Oct. 25. The CBA Holiday Arts & Crafts Show is Nov 22-23. Tickets for the Sip & Shop are on sale now through the Pilot Hangar. Tickets are presale only. The Holiday Arts & Crafts Show is open to the public on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. … The next CBA general meeting and rosary is Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in the school chapel. All are welcome. The rosary is followed by the meeting, then dinner and drinks in the cafeteria … VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Many volunteer opportunities are available for the Sip & Shop and Craft Show. DADS CLUB: Thank you to those who made it  out to the first general meeting. The turnout was the best in years. … The next Dads Club support event is the Homecoming Game against Detroit Catholic Central at Wayne State on Oct. 4. This is a big game and requires a lot of dads for security, 50-50 raffle, and more. … Deadline to fill the vacant Treasurer position is this Friday. Send an email to us with the subject line: Dads Club Treasurer Position. Please include your name and work experience and availability.  Responsibilities include keeping account of funds, managing any and all transactions during the year, and communicating with the school regarding finances when necessary. Attendance at all general meetings, as well as board meetings, are required.
