Science Students Visit Oakland University Lab Sciences Department

Recently, several students from two of Mrs. Mary Balamucki’s science classes - Principles of Biomedical Science and honors Anatomy and Physiology, along with students in the HOSA Club visited the Lab Sciences Department at Oakland University to learn about Biomedical Sciences (BSM) as a career.

The boys received a tour, and then a presentation about BMS opportunities.

The students then completed two activities in the lab:

  • A blood typing activity
  • A microscope activity with hematopoietic cells

DLS STEM Coordinator Mr. Scott Husken said, “College and Career readiness is one of the essential goals of the STEM programming at De La Salle. Students need exposure to what careers are available in addition to the transferable skills that we teach in the STEM classes.”

He added, “Mrs. Balamucki does an excellent job putting our boys in situations that expose them to future opportunities that will be available to them."

Junior Carter Atkins said, “I enjoyed the trip to OU. It was valuable in showing us some different, slightly less traditional routes still viable if we have an interest in medicine.”

Carter also enjoyed the “opportunity to scope out the OU Campus, which proved to be useful.”
