Senior Spotlight: Anthony Cooper

“Anthony eats, sleeps, and drinks business,” says DLS Faculty member Mr. Dennis Koch, ‘94.  “He is one our best business students and is exponentially getting better because he loves to learn about business.”

Koch’s comments truly describe senior Anthony Cooper who has been accepted to the Broad School of Business at Michigan State University.

Anthony recently led the DLS team in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition. Teams examine a case study featuring a potential client (a real Wharton graduate) and collaborate to meet that client’s long-term investment goals. Over the course of 10 weeks, teams develop an investment strategy and build a portfolio.

Anthony’s interest in the stock market goes back to his eighth-grade experience at St. Lawrence (Utica) where he first learned about investments. He has participated in the DLS stock market games and evaluated stocks based on Lasallian values. He has built on that knowledge and now that he is 18, has his own market portfolio. “No more play money,” Anthony said.

In addition to the Wharton Challenge, Anthony is also participating in the Federal Reserve Challenge. Teams of five or fewer students prepare a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 1–minute session with an actual member of the Federal Reserve. That competition is in two weeks, March 17-21.

But before that Fed Challenge, Anthony will be competing at the DECA State Finals in the Financial Services, Team Decision-Making category. The DECA competition is the weekend prior to the Fed Challenge, in downtown Detroit, March 13-15.

In addition to these activities, Anthony is a leader in the Lasallian International Microgrant Program. As part of the DLS Accounting class, students have seen videos on other Lasallian schools in impoverished countries. They have then worked with Brother Jim Martino, FSC, in evaluating the grant proposals.

In addition to these activities, Anthony is a member of the National Honor Society, the Link Crew, the World Cultures Club, and served as the Kairos rector in Fall 2024.

He will be graduating summa cum laude, with a transcript that includes several Advanced Placement (AP) classes, including Psychology, U.S. History, Statistics, Environmental Science, and Microeconomics.

At MSU, he plans to major in Finance or Accounting. “I have enjoyed Accounting this year, and being in Finance is a family tradition,” Anthony says.

He chose to attend DLS because “I wanted to go to a strong academic institution as well as a faith-centered school.”

Anthony has this advice for a freshman: ”If you are struggling in class do not hesitate to reach out to your teachers. They all want to see you succeed!”

Faculty member Mr. Mike Shortt, DLS ‘04, says, “Anthony is always so upbeat and positive. In addition to being an outstanding student, he is genuine, has a great sense of humor, and constantly goes above and beyond expectations. I am excited to see what he accomplishes in his very bright future.”

Mr. Jim Singelyn, DLS ‘90 says, “He is an absolute pleasure to have in class.”

Anthony says his best memory of DLS will be the Kairos 53 and Kairos 54 retreats.

He has an outside job at Cloverleaf Pizza, in Shelby Township, making pizzas, delivering, and doing dishes.

His parents are John and Monica Cooper, and his older brother Evan, Class of 2023, is attending Ohio State University. Evan is in the OSU Business School.

The family lives in Shelby Township and attends St. Kieran Parish.
