Senior Spotlight: Charlie Seip

Senior Charlie Seip carries a full-class load, including several Advanced Placement courses, yet he has found time to be involved in various activities including sports and Student Council.

And he has found the time to participate in “Service Saturdays.”

To be a Kairos leader.

And to work at his family’s business.

Faculty member Mr. John Berlin says, “Charlie is truly a man’s man who is accountable and will not complain, regardless of the task.”

The son of alumnus Charles Seip, Sr., Class of ‘95, Charlie attended Holy Family in Rochester before coming to De La Salle as a freshman. At Holy Family he received the “Student of the Year” award as an eighth-grader.

In addition to his family connection, Charlie said he had attended DLS events before high school - and always felt welcomed.

By the end of senior year, he will have taken 10 Advanced Placement (AP) classes. His current course load includes AP Psychology, AP Calculus AB, AP Spanish 4, and AP Computer Science; he carries a 4.1 GPA.

His favorite class in high school has been Mr. Berlin’s Church History course, and Charlie cites Berlin as one of his favorite teachers, along with Mr. Ben Westphal, Mr. Wilson Juncaj, Mr. Brad Robinson, and Mr. Jim Singelyn.

In addition to the Student Council, Charlie has been a member of the Link Crew and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is also one of the leaders of the student cheering section, “The Brozone.”

Charlie was a Kairos leader and considers Kairos one of the highlights of high school.

Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski has high praise for Charlie.

“He has participated in school committees that initiate policy changes and growth at De La Salle,” said Brother Ken. “He created the Ping Pong Club and was a leader of the club which highlights a different culture each month. As a  Kairos leader, he is a true leader, spending time with his classmates and dedicating many hours to the retreat program. I am confident he will do well in all that he does.”

Charlie has been involved with “Service Saturdays,” a volunteer event open to all DLS students that involves traveling to local churches, usually in Detroit, and assisting with church clean-ups, liturgical decorations, and whatever else may be needed at the parish. He enjoys spending time with his friends on these days and plans to continue volunteering.

Along with Kairos, Charlie says he will have fond memories of running in the chariot race at homecoming senior year and being a leader of the Brozone and cross-country team. He has participated in cross-country all four years, and captained the team this year as a senior; he has also run track the last three years.

Charlie is the Scholar-Athlete nominee for cross-country.

Mr. Westphal says, “Charlie is mature beyond his years and is a role model for all De La Salle Pilots! His future is bright and I look forward to seeing the impact he makes in the world!””

Charlie’s advice to freshmen is to “Take advantage of any opportunity you get. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.”

Charlie is planning to attend Michigan State University, and major in some aspect of finance.

Whenever possible, Charlie works at the family business, Holiday Pizza, established by his grandparents.

Charlie has also been involved with karate for 10 years and has been a black belt for six years.

He lives in Shelby Township with his parents, and the family attends St. Andrew’s in Rochester. He has a sister who is a freshman at Regina High School and a younger brother in second grade at Holy Family.
