Senior Spotlight: Chris Azzi

During the summer of 2024, senior Chris Azzi dedicated five weeks to working with the Youth Sector of the Lebanese Red Cross in Lebanon. While he and his family visit Lebanon each summer to see relatives, this year Chris also chose to spend time volunteering.

His Red Cross experiences included cleaning up communities around the area in Jounieh and also participating in educational events, such as sleep cycle education and disease prevention.

Chris also took a volunteer position with a local NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), where he packaged and delivered food and supplies to five local communities while supervising other volunteers. Chris also worked in the NGO’s soup kitchen, assisting the chef and serving meals to those in need. He plans to return and help again in the summer of 2025. He had previously volunteered in a local soup kitchen in Lebanon, run by a priest, but the kitchen closed permanently due to COVID-19.

Balancing a rigorous academic load, Chris is enrolled in several Advanced Placement (AP) classes. As a junior, he took AP Calculus AB, AP Language and Composition, AP Biology, and AP French IV. His senior schedule includes AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Chemistry.

Math teacher Mrs. Catherine Leix praised Chris, saying, “Chris was an outstanding student in my AP Calculus AB class last year and continues to excel in high-level math, taking both AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics. He also frequently tutors younger students, helping them master the fundamentals of math.”

In addition to his academic pursuits, Chris is deeply involved in extracurricular activities. As Vice President of DECA, he and his partner, senior Jack Madigan, earned a state finalist award for their role plays.

He also serves as Co-President of both the World Cultures Club and the DLS Debate Team, where he worked alongside fellow senior John Kajy to revive the debate program at DLS. Chris is also active in the HOSA/Medical Club, plays on the Varsity Tennis Team, serves on the Student Council, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Varsity Tennis Coach Mrs. Annmarie Michol remarks, “Chris Azzi is a dedicated student and passionate tennis player whose determination shines both on and off the court. Balancing rigorous academics with competitive team practices, he exemplifies the spirit of teamwork and discipline.”

An avid musician, Chris has taken piano lessons since he was 10, competing in several competitions where he earned first-place trophies. “Music has always been a passion of mine and is a great way to relax and enjoy my free time,” he says.

A graduate of St. Mary Grade School in Mt. Clements, he chose to attend De La Salle  for “its excellent educational opportunities and its faith-based environment.”

Chris plans to attend the University of Michigan, majoring in biology on a pre-med track with the goal of becoming a cardiovascular surgeon. “I’ve always been fascinated by the human heart, especially since heart disease runs in my family,” Chris says. “I want to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Chris advises freshmen to “seize every opportunity you get the chance to and make sure to stay on top of your academics.”

He lives in Macomb Township with his parents Maro and Christine Azzi, and younger brother Michael, a DLS junior. The family attends St. Sharbel Catholic Church in Clinton Township
