Senior Spotlight: Eddie Martel

Senior Eddie Martel has a full schedule that includes three Advanced Placement (AP) classes this year. But while Eddie carries one of the top three GPA’s in the senior class and is a member of the National Honor Society, he is also an extremely involved student.

While he didn’t play a fall sport, he does play basketball and baseball. He is a power forward and will be one of the DLS varsity basketball captains this year. Come spring, Eddie will be again a member of the DLS varsity baseball team, where he is a pitcher and outfielder.

He also participates in the DLS DECA Club which is currently preparing for its first competition in December.

And you will also find Eddie spending time each week during power hour in Bible Study.

He attends DLS games and is in the Brozone: the DLS Cheering section.

His classes this year include AP Calculus BC (he took AP Calculus AB as a junior), AP Literature and Composition, and AP Physics 1. His junior year schedule also included AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, and AP English Language and Composition; he took AP U.S. History as a sophomore.

Eddis is currently enrolled in the new one-semester Cybersecurity course and learning about coding for websites.

“I like coding,” he said. “I might be what I want to go into, so possibly I’ll study computer science and AI in college.”

He has also taken the Introduction to Engineering Design and the Engineering Design class.

Eddie is considering the University of Michigan and Cornell, among others.

Eddie advises freshmen: “Enjoy every day you have at De La Salle. Do as many activities as you can. Enjoy the present and appreciate all the great things you have around you and you’ll do great. It’s more about attitude.”

Eddie attended St. Mary’s Grade School in Mt. Clemens. His mother is Julie Martel and his father is the late Ed Martel, DLS Class of 1987.

DLS Varsity Baseball Coach Dan Cimini said, "Eddie is an amazing young man. He brought so much energy and love for baseball to our Varsity Baseball Team. He threw a complete game shutout vs Avondale last spring and got the walkoff hit in the last inning. I am so proud of him, both on the field and in the classroom. He is a quiet leader on our team and a pleasure to coach. I played against his dad in 1987. What an outstanding pitcher and student athlete. Eddie has followed in his late father’s footsteps.”

Teachers note Eddie’s great attitude both in and out of the classroom.

Teacher and coach Scott Grimmer said, “Eddie is one of the best representatives of an exceptional student-athlete at De La Salle. He is extremely dedicated, hard-working, humble, kind, and respectful. His deep devotion to his faith life is something all students and adults at De La Salle should strive to mirror. He truly leads by example and does not wish to call attention to himself.”

“Every instructor who wishes to facilitate thoughtful conversations/dialogue on weighty social justice topics needs an Eddie Martel in class,” Theology teacher John Berlin said. “Few young men possess the critical thinking skills infused with feasible affective insight for social justice issues that Eddie readily shares and supports. He brings a passion for learning and a worldview to class everyday. He exemplifies all that is good at De La Salle.”

Math teacher Catherine Leix said, “Eddie was a model student in my AP AB Calculus class last year. He always came to class prepared and ready to learn. He had a great attitude and worked well in groups with his classmates.”

Eddie was also part of the DLS Service to trip to Guatemala in June 2025.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Eddie during our service trip,” said Kasia Griffith, one of the DLS Foreign Language teachers. “He proved himself to be very responsible and really fun to be around!”

Mike Jolly says, “If I were to choose a single word to best describe Eddie Martel it would be ‘authentic’ - I do not recall anyone who better exemplifies humble leadership and true school spirit than he does. He cheers and supports his teammates to the very end, and he comfortably does so many critically helpful things that one would not normally expect of a varsity athlete. He is a great role model for those wanting to be a champion.”
