Senior Spotlight: Glen Vasili

Although senior Glen Vasili came to De La Salle Collegiate as a junior, he has managed to put together a class schedule for his final two years of high school that includes ten Advanced Placement (AP) classes.

Glen is currently enrolled in AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, AP Statistics, and AP Psychology.

That Psychology course didn’t fit in his senior year schedule, along with his Theology class and the Honors Anatomy and Physiology class, so he is taking that Psych class independently. He receives materials from faculty member Mr. Brad Robinson, the course’s teacher, and reads the material and hands in assignments just as if he were  sitting in Room 326.

Assistant Principal Mr. Christopher Dean, De La Salle Collegiate Class of 1989, said that Glen is the only student this year taking a class independently; Glen plans to take the AP Psychology test in May 2025.

Glen’s junior year AP test scores attest to his academic abilities; he earned two fives and three fours on his May 2024 tests: AP Calculus AB, AP Government, AP Chemistry, AP Language and Composition, and AP French.

Math teacher Ms. Catherine Leix has taught Glen and says, “He works very hard and accepts nothing but the best from himself.”

Glen transferred into her AP Calculus AB course last year about a week into school.

“Though he had a whole week of make-up work to do, he got caught up in no time and stayed at the top of the class all year,” Leix said. “I am proud to say that he earned a five on the exam and have no doubt he can earn a five on the AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics exams this year.”

She adds, “Glen has been an excellent addition to our De La Salle community, and I am happy to have him as an AP student for two years running.”

Theology teacher Mr. John Berlin describes Glen as “positive, prepared, and interactive - a young man who truly thirsts for knowledge for knowledge’s sake.”

Berlin also says, “He is all you want in a De La Salle student: a critical thinker, a strong writer, and a kind person. He is beyond a joy to have in class; he is that student you can depend on when class participation is needed to develop a teaching point.”

Faculty member Mr. Thaier Mukhtar said, “Glen is a delightful young man who works very hard to reach academic excellence.”

Glen’s GPA (grade point average) is one of the highest in the Class of 2025.

Mukhtar added, “He brought so much to our AP Government class discussions. He was always in tune to what we were talking about and how it relates to the real world.”

After spending his freshman and sophomore years at a specialized high school in Macomb County, Glen decided to attend De La Salle.

“I chose DLS because I think that the community is irreplaceable and fosters great qualities that everyone should possess,” he said.

Glen is involved with a variety of activities, including the DLS Swim Team and the DLS HOSA team. HOSA, aimed at students interested in the Health Professions, offers annual competitions in a variety of subject areas.

Glen is interested in pursuing a career in medicine and would like to attend the University of Michigan and major in Biology.

He has also joined the DLS SAVE Club (aimed at recycling) and the World Cultures Club.

Despite his heavy academic load, Glen has two part-time jobs; tutoring at a Kumon Learning Center and making pizzas at a local market.

“I really cannot say enough about Glen the student or Glen the quality young man,” Berlin said. “I truly look forward to seeing where he takes his energy and talent after De La Salle.”

Glen lives in St. Clair Shores with his parents, Eduart and Ariola Vasili, and his younger brother, an eighth-grader who plans to attend De La Salle next year.

The family attends religious services at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Sterling Heights.
