Senior Spotlight: Jacob Hubbs

Although senior Jacob Hubbs has been President of the DLS Law Club and has participated in Mock Trial competitions in both his junior and senior years, he plans to pursue a pre-med curriculum at the University of Michigan; he would like to become an orthopedic surgeon.

Hubbs will graduate summa cum laude with the Class of 2024, with ten Advanced Placement (AP) classes on his transcript, as well as an AP Scholar with Honor award from the College Board. That award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

His AP classes include Chemistry, Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, Human Geography, U.S. History, and Microeconomics. He is taking AP Government online.

Despite his heavy AP schedule, Hubbs has found time to serve as the President of the National Honor Society, the vice president of the DLS Student Council, and Secretary of the Medical Club. He has also participated in the school’s World Cultures Club and the Link Crew.

Additionally, he played tennis his junior and senior years and was part of the DLS Tennis team contingent to the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals as a 1 doubles flight.

Earlier this year, he helped run two blood drives with the Medical Club, and is helping with the April 15 Drive.

Mrs. Mary Balamucki, Science teacher and moderator of the DLS Medical Club, who has also taught Jake in Advanced Placement Biology and Anatomy/Physiology, says, “I really have enjoyed getting to know Jake. He is kind, a great student, motivated, and dedicated to his studies.”

Not surprisingly, Balamucki and the AP Biology class have been his favorites at DLS.

Mr. Mike Jolly, another faculty member, has high praise for Hubbs. “He was an All-County tennis player and is as pleasant and friendly as anyone in our school. He has compiled an impressive number of service hours."

Jolly added, “If I were asked to select a ‘poster boy’ for De La Salle, Jacob would certainly be among those strongly considered.”

Jacob usually averages 40 hours a week of work during the summer. In 2021, he began work with Disability Made Easy, a company that builds and installs wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and stairlifts.

“I built parts and assembled ramps, and then installed them at people’s houses,” Jacob said.

He also caddied at the Country Club of Detroit.

He has also volunteered with Miracle Baseball, a non-profit organization for children with special needs.

Jacob has some advice for freshmen.

“Even if you’re doing well, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The teachers are always willing to help you grow as a student.”

Jacob lives in Shelby Township with his parents Andy and Colleen, and attends St. Lawrence Parish.

His older brother, Alexander, graduated in the Class of 2022.
