Senior Spotlight: John Tosch

“I taught John last year, and he was the hardest worker in my class,” says DLS Faculty Member Mr. Scott Grimmer. “ Not one of the hardest workers. The hardest worker by far.”

Senior John Tosch ranks among the top 10 academically in the Class of 2025, with a full schedule of Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Additionally, he is involved in several student activities and plays two varsity sports.

His senior class schedule includes AP Microeconomics, AP Statistics, AP Biology, and AP English Literature and Composition.

As a junior, he took AP Calculus AB, AP English Language and Composition, AP Chemistry (his favorite high school class), and AP Government; his AP U.S. History class was in his sophomore year.

That adds up to nine AP classes - and possible placement out of several classes in his freshman year of college. John plans to pursue a medical degree and become a dermatologist; he would like to attend either the University of Notre Dame or the University of Michigan.

John was inducted into the DLS National Honor Society as a sophomore and is a member of the Student Council. As a junior, he was an officer in the student environmental group SAVE (Students Against Vandalizing the Environment). His other interests include the World Cultures Club - he looks forward to a planned family trip to Italy in 2025, and the Medical Club.

In addition to his excellence in the classroom, John is also a member of the DLS Cross Country team; he considers Cross Country to be his favorite high school activity.

He also plays lacrosse.

“John is a positive and polite young man, has a great sense of humor and is extremely hardworking in all that he does - from his AP Courses to his devotion to Cross Country and Lacrosse,” said Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski, FSC, Class of 1984.”His personal drive to excel is admirable.”

Mr. Grimmer said, “I have always found him to be personable, respectful, and very kind. He is clearly taking advantage of the opportunities he has been given during his years at De La Salle.”

John has a younger brother, Michael, who is a freshman this year (Class of 2028).

And John has some advice for all freshmen: “Be open to everything.”

He says the secret to success is time management. “You have to know how long you have to put forth for each assignment or test, and what needs more preparation and a couple of nights of studying.”

Mr. Mike Jolly, a retired teacher and coach who has stayed involved with the Outdoorsmen’s Club and with the Lacrosse program, has high praise for John.

“John has been a bright light in our school since his arrival in 2021,” Mr. Jolly said. “His grades are outstanding which, when combined with his efforts on the lacrosse field and the cross country course, constitute a genuine student-athlete. It was a privilege to coach John's elders, and I feel the same about being his friend and supporter. I look forward to witnessing a great year ahead for him and our school.”

John is a third-generation Pilot, following in the footsteps of his father Jon (Class of 1994), uncles James (Class of 1995) and Joseph (Class of 1997), and grandfather, the late John (Class of 1962).

John worked as a cashier for Holiday Pizza this past summer.

John attended Holy Family Regional Grade School in Rochester, and lives in Rochester Hills with his parents, Dr. Jon Tosch (Internal Medicine) and Dr. Kimberly Tosch (Gastroenterology).
