Joshua “Josh” Opolski has been one of the most involved seniors of the Class of 2025.
In addition to playing tennis all four years and captaining the 2024 team, Josh has played baseball, and been involved in Student Council, the National Honor Society, and the Campus Ministry program.
Josh’s strong tennis play netted him a spot on both the 2023 and 2024 All- Catholic First Teams, as well as these laudatory comments from Mrs. Annmarie Michol, the DLS Varsity Tennis Coach.
"Joshua has been an outstanding leader both on and off the court,” Michol said. “As captain of the Tennis team, he set the standard for hard work, sportsmanship, and teamwork. His dedication to service and commitment to helping others truly reflect his character. He leads by example, always treating teammates, coaches, and opponents with the utmost respect. It has been an honor to coach him, and I have no doubt he will continue to make a positive impact in all that he does."
Josh lives in Chesterfield Township and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School in Ira Township. He plans to attend Macomb Community College and take pre-requisite classes common to all majors before deciding what career path to pursue. Josh notes that the tuition at Macomb is free.
His older brothers are also alumni: Joe (Class of 2020) and Jonathan (Class of 2023).
Josh chose to attend De La Salle because he saw “how much it made my two older brothers change from boys into men. I wanted the same thing to happen to me.”
In addition to his brothers, Josh is a fourth-generation DLS student. His family tree includes:
- Great-grandfather William K. Schmid, Class of 1932.
- Great-uncle Ken Schmid, Class of 1955
- Uncles John Cafagna, Class of 1992, and Aaron Schmid, Class of 1994
Josh has been a class Senator since freshmen year, and played baseball at DLS for three years.
He has served as a Kairos retreatant and leader, says the prayers over the school’s PA System, is an altar server at school Masses, a regular attendee of the school’s monthly “Mass Mobs” at local parishes, and a leader of the DLS Bible Study Club both his junior and senior years.
Mr. Ben Westphal ‘16 organizes the Kairos retreats and says, “Josh is an excellent student leader. He exemplifies what it means to be Lasallian. His constant involvement in Campus Ministry is inspiring. In his multitude of leadership roles, he is a true role model for ALL students.”
Josh says his best memory of DLS will be his Kairos experiences.
“I have several memories at DLS that I enjoy and will remember for the rest of my life, but undoubtedly the best memory I have is the four days I spent on Kairos 54. Kairos is a four-day religious retreat, where you spend time growing closer to God and your brothers that went with you. I will never forget my time on Kairos 54 as a leader and Kairos 52 as a retreatant.”
Josh advises freshmen to “not be the person who goes through your next four years at De La Salle not talking to anyone. Try to make as many friends as possible because the people you meet at De La Salle will be your brothers for life.”
Josh and his parents Joseph and Jennifer (Schmid) attend St. Isidore in Macomb.
