Senior Spotlight: Luke Horlocker

Congratulations to Luke Horlocker, who will graduate summa cum laude with the DLS Class of 2023.

A four-year swimmer (breast stroke and freestyle) and a member of the National Honor Society, Horlocker will be attending Oakland University, and majoring in computer engineering or software design.

Swim coach Jim Singelyn said, "Luke was a tremendously hard worker and became a sort of utility guy for us. He could swim in any event we could put him to help the team win meets. Luke also excelled in the classroom and was always willing to help classmates and teammates with anything they needed."

During his high school career, Horlocker has taken several engineering classes, including Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Engineering Design.

He took three Advanced Placement (AP) classes during his junior year, including Calculus AB, U.S. History, and Chemistry; he is currently enrolled in two more AP classes - Calculus BC and Environmental Science.
However, his favorite class has been theology, as he enjoyed “learning about world religions and church history.”

He attended St. Augustine’s in Richmond and decided to continue his education at De La Salle after a seventh-grade Pilot for a day visit.
Horlocker says that he will fondly remember working out in the weight room during freshman year and meeting a lot of his friends.

He has advice for incoming freshmen. “The four years fly by. Picture what you want your high school years to be like, and what you picture for yourself after graduation, and make it happen.”

Horlocker was profiled earlier this school year when he earned his Eagle Scout Award; his project involved building a stand for a historical bell displayed in front of the China Township offices. Involved with scouting since kindergarten, he intends to pursue the Order of the Arrow.

Before heading to college in the fall, Horlocker will be spending a week camping with his Boy Scout troop on Isle Royale, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Since he has turned 19, he will be with the group as an adult leader.

He lives in East China Township with is parents Robert and Debbie, and they are members of St. Augustine in Richmond.

Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski said, "Luke's hard work and dedication is very evident, as a Varsity Swimmer, in his GPA, his job in Marine City - and his daily commute from East China which is most impressive! Luke is an honest, hardworking, and kind young man - am proud to call him a fellow alumnus."
