Senior Spotlight: Max Wyszczelski

“Max is a genuine leader who makes an impact in all he does,” says faculty member Ben Westphal, ‘16.

Westphal’s description is definitely appropriate for senior Max Wyszczelski, who is not only the Student Council Vice-President.

Max captained the De La Salle Collegiate Soccer team, which won its second consecutive state championship earlier this fall. He was subsequently named an All-State Soccer player (First Team).

And he won the team’s Brother Carnaghi Leadership Award as Max models the school’s motto “Builders of Boys, Makers of Men.” Coach Thaier Mukhtar says, “Max is a great role model of a scholar-athlete.”

Max’s father Matthew, ‘90, frequently took Max to De La Salle games, throughout his grade school days at St. Joan of Arc (St. Clair Shores).

So when it came time for high school, Max already knew he was headed to the Collegiate and would be continuing his Catholic education.

In May 2026, Max will be graduating summa cum laude.

His transcript is filled with honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including U.S. History (sophomore year), Biology, English Language and Composition, and Microeconomics (junior year), and four AP classes this year: American Government, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, and Human Geography.

In addition to his heavy academic schedule, Max is playing winter travel soccer with a club team, and is considering possibly playing soccer in college.

While Max is filling out college applications, he is undecided about a future career.

“I have narrowed it down to any sort of business administration or management and environmental sustainability,” Max says. “I am not entirely sure why business, but I am really fascinated with the environment and how humans affect it and how we can revert these issues.”

His involvement at DLS includes the National Honor Society. Moderator Ben Westphal says Max has been “serving the community in numerous ways, including individual tutoring with various middle school students. He truly wants the best for others and represents DLS in an exceptional way.”

Max is also involved with the Campus Ministry program and has assisted with the freshman retreat and serves as a peer minister.

He has also volunteered at St. Florian’s annual Strawberry Festival and at Queen of Apostles, two churches in Hamtramck, and assisted at the parishes’ food drives.

Max advises freshmen: “Your time here goes by way too fast for you to not be involved. Go to the sporting events, join a club, just be a part of the school.”

Max will take with him lots of memories, including “sitting and talking with my friends at the same table in the Commons for the past four years or spending all of my advisory time in Mr. Hoskins' room sophomore year just to hang out with my friends.”

He also cites ‘the bus rides to and from the soccer games where we used to celebrate before every playoff game my junior and senior year.”

Assistant Principal Annmarie Michol says, “As a dedicated Student Council officer and a key leader in our soccer program, Max consistently leads with integrity, positivity, and hard work. Known for being kind to everyone and setting an example both on and off the field, he embodies what it means to be a true gentleman and scholar. His strong character, commitment, and drive will undoubtedly lead him to great success in the years ahead.”

Max lives in Harper Woods with his parents, Matthew and Ella, and his older sister Ella, a Regina graduate who attends Wayne State University.
