Senior Spotlight: Rick Artymovich

Despite a full extra-curricular schedule that includes captaining the DLS Varsity Golf team, being a Brozone leader, representing his class on the Student Council, and serving as a Kairos leader, senior Richard “Ricky” Artymovich is on track to graduate with Magna Cum Laude honors.

His senior year schedule includes four Advanced Placement (AP) classes: English Literature and Composition, Spanish 4, Statistics, and Psychology.

He has been a member of the National Honor Society since his sophomore year and on the Student Council all four years.

Ricky has also been a member of the Link Crew.

“I know how important freshman year was to me,” he said. “I wanted to influence freshmen and impact them at orientation and make this year a good experience for them.”

He cited the Kairos retreat he made during the spring of 2023, during his junior year, as his most memorable event.

“Mr. Ben Westphal suggested I go on the Kairos retreat, and it ended up being one of the best experiences of my life,” Ricky said. “Kairos had such an impact on me.”

That experience led to his being a student leader for Kairos 52 this past fall.

“He was a dynamic student leader and shared his faith with his peers in a relevant and sincere manner,” said Sr. Kathleen Matz, CDP, DLS Campus Minister. “He has a pleasant disposition and a welcoming attitude.”

Ricky is also a leader in the student cheering section called “The Brozone.”

“I attend a lot of games, and really looked forward to being a senior,” Ricky said.

Veteran DLS Varsity Golf Coach Doug McKay has high praise for Ricky.

“Ricky is well-respected, and has been a great asset to the golf program, and more importantly, a great asset to De La Salle,” McKay said. “He is a great leader and a great student.”

Ricky’s father, Richard “Rich” Artymovich, ‘95, encouraged Ricky to attend the DLS Golf summer camps to learn more about the school.

“I really like the De La Salle community,” Ricky said. “The Brotherhood of De La Salle.”

Ricky cites faculty members Mr. Wilson Juncaj and Mr. Ben Westphal as his favorite teachers. “They have helped me through these four years,” Ricky said.

In turn, Westphal has high praise for Ricky.

"Ricky is an outstanding student with a student a bright future. He has been a tremendous leader in Link Crew, the National Honor Society, and in Kairos 52. He is a student who always wants to assist others and have an impact on their lives. For example, he is constantly participating in Mass through reading prayers of the faithful, attending sporting events, and assisting at alumni events. He is a Pilot who exemplifies the Lasallian values."

Ricky advises incoming freshmen to “Take your school work seriously and care about your grades. Get involved with clubs, sports, and any other student events.”

While he will likely major in business, and pursue finance or marketing, his college choices are undecided.

When he isn’t involved in school activities or studies, he helps out at the family business, EA Graphics, in Sterling Heights.

Ricky attended St. Lawrence Grade School in Utica. He lives with his parents, Rich and Jennifer, in Shelby Township. The family belongs to St. Kieran’s, also in Shelby Township.
