Kudos to our De La Salle Collegiate Varsity Soccer Team, participants in the 2021 Grosse Pointe Sunrise Rotary Run held Saturday, September 19, 2021, on Lake Shore Rd. in Grosse Pointe Farms.
The Sunrise Rotary, through its Foundation, provides college scholarships in varying amounts to students in its service area; the annual run income goes directly to the Foundation. De La Salle students have benefitted from the Rotary’s awards for the past several years.
Coach Thaier Mukhtar and the entire varsity soccer team were present. “Our boys welcomed the opportunity to help raise money for the Rotary’s Foundation,” Mukhtar said. “The Rotary scholarships help seniors get to college, and this run helps seniors, not just students from De La Salle.”
The students ran the 5K competitive run, while Mukhtar, and fellow faculty member Jay Ritchie and his two daughters, participated in the 5K walk.
“There were so many positive remarks about De La Salle,” Mukhtar said. “Our boys were waving to the crowd, and spectators were cheering them on.”
Grosse Pointe Sunrise Rotary member Rick Luczak, DLS ‘62, approached De La Salle earlier this year about becoming involved in the charitable event, and was enthusiastic about the students' participation.
“The young men that Mr. Mukhtar provided are the very best of the best,” Luczak said. “They were amazing in their athleticism and the way that they represented De La Salle. There are not enough adjectives to describe these young student-athletes.”
Luczak noted that many people approached him and commented on how the students were respectful and courteous. “To all who participated, I am appreciative and proud of each and every one of you,” Luczak said.
DLS Counselor Jon Hickey, who coordinates the scholarship applications to the Sunrise Rotary, also handled the registration process for the run.
“This was a great opportunity for our students to get together for a great cause, and to be visible in the community,” Hickey said.
