Student Spotlight: Senior Colton Fuqua

Meet Colton Fuqua, Class of 2024, who captains both the De La Salle ice hockey and golf teams, and has served as a leader for a Kairos retreat and the DLS Link Crew.

Colton attended St. Thecla Grade School before following his older brother Teagan (Class of 2021) to DLS.

“My older brother liked DLS, and so I decided I would come here, too,” Colton said.

Faculty member Mr. Mike Shortt, ‘04, has known Colton since his freshman year. “He has a terrific and upbeat attitude,” Shortt says. “On the golf course and in the classroom, he is someone who always does more than is expected or even required.”

Shortt adds, “He is a well-rounded student; it has been enjoyable to see him grow into the man he is.”

Coach Doug McKay, Head Coach of the DLS Varsity Golf team, says, “Colton is a great asset to the golf team. He has played golf for four years, and is, by far, one of the hardest-working players on the team. He splits his time very efficiently with hockey.”

Faculty member Mr. Ben Westphal, ‘16, taught Colton as a sophomore and encouraged him to attend the Kairos retreat in his junior year.

Colton says Kairos “was one of the best experiences of my life,” which led him to pursue a leadership position for the Fall 2023 retreat.

Westphal has high praise, and said, “He is mature beyond his years. When a task is presented, Colton doesn’t complain about it. He embraces it and makes the best out of the situation. Colton lives out each day utilizing the Lasallian values in everything he does.”

Colton was motivated to join the DLS Link Crew due to his own experience.

“I joined the DLS Link Crew because I know how important freshman year was to me,” he said. He advises freshmen to “take your work seriously and care about your grades. Get involved in clubs, sports, and any other school events.”

Colton is one of the leaders of the DLS cheering section, the “Brozone.”

“I attend a lot of games and looked forward to being a senior.”

Colton has been nominated by the staff for the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

Colton’s younger brother Lleyton is a current freshman; Colton’s mother, Mrs. Kelly LaRose, works in the DLS Advancement Office, and his uncle Mr. Chad LaRose, is the head coach of the varsity hockey team.

Colton is currently undecided about college but says he will likely study business.
