Students Prep Bags for Homeless

The DLS HOSA Club recently completed its Thanksgiving project to gather supplies for the homeless.

With donations from the De La Salle Collegiate Family, the students prepared 72 bags that were delivered to the Salvation Army Center in Mt. Clemens on Friday, November 21.

Each bag contained 20 items, such as toothpaste, hand sanitizer, and soap, and will be distributed with Thanksgiving meals.

Leftover supplies and some bags that included feminine products were donated to the Corner Shower and Laundry, an organization that provides shower and laundry services for those with limited access to those facilities. The organization welcomes soap and oral care items.

Student leaders for the project included seniors Bill Ginter, Michael Kosanke, MIchael Voronenko, and Matthew Robinson, and junior Carter Atkins.

HOSA Moderator Mrs. Mary Balamucki said the students’ efforts were well-worth the effort.

“This project was very humbling,” Balamucki said. “The response by our Pilot family was incredible- we did not expect the outpouring of support that we received. Assembling the bags was a great experience for our young men. I could see the look of pride and accomplishment on their faces as they began to realize the scope of what they had built. Leadership at the Salvation Army Center was truly grateful to have the donations, and I feel good knowing they will be distributed to people in need during Thanksgiving. I am so grateful for this opportunity to serve along with our young men of HOSA.”

Earlier this fall, the HOSA students conducted a blood drive, netting 43 pints, and are working on a drive to collect money for toys for Children’s Hospital.
