De La Salle Collegiate; Pilots; 5K race; WarrenWARREN – On Sunday, the De La Salle cross-country team used the second annual Run Warren 5K to gauge its varsity squad for the upcoming fall season.

The Pilots did very well, finishing first in the high school boys category, while also receiving $1,000 for their athletic department.

“This meet is a great preseason tune up run that we use to see who runs varsity next Saturday at the Michigan Catholic Invitational, the Bishop’s Cup,” Pilots coach Sandy Buchanan said. “It also lets us see how the various packs run their suggested race pace and for how long they can sustain that pace.”

The Pilots grabbed the top five individual spots with each finisher coming in under 20 minutes. They were junior Zachary Jarski (18:28.0), senior captain Joe Davey (18:52.2), junior Nicholas Schmidt (19:01.4), sophomore Drew Renaud (19:11.2), and senior captain Sam Streberger (19:16.8).

For having the most participants among Warren high schools, De La Salle’s athletic department received $1000 from the race’s sponsor – the Warren Community Foundation.

For its overall combined times, Regina High School won The Mayor’s Cup for finishing in first place. De La Salle came in first among the boys with Cousino finishing second.

The Pilots will be recognized at next month’s Warren Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
