Giannone Named Lions’ HS Coach of the Year

Congratulations to De La Salle Collegiate Head Varsity Football Coach, named the Detroit Lions/Farm Bureau Insurance High School Coach of the Year! 

Coach Giannone was honored at hal-time of the Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears game  on December 16 at Ford Field. 

Giannone led the Pilots to a 41-6 victory over Livonia Franklin on November 24 to win the Division 2 MHSAA Football Championship. The Pilots finished with a 12-2 record, winning 7 in a row to end the season and outscoring their opponents 165-26 in the Playoffs. De La Salle defeated two-time defending state champion Detroit King 14-13 in the state semifinals. This was the Pilots’ second Football State Championship (first won in 2014). 

In his second season with De La Salle, Giannone has a 16-7 record, As head coach at Macomb Dakota for 18 seasons, he led the Cougars to consecutive MHSAA Division 1 Championships in 2006 and 2006. Giannone has coached high school football for 37 years, 20 as a head coach. 

The High School Coach of the Year was selected by a panel of football media members, and by an online vote. 

Giannone received a $4,000 donation to the De La Salle Collegiate football program. 

He is now in the running to be named NFL National HIgh School Coach of the Year. He will be invited to the NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando, FL, January 26-28, 2018, where the finalist will be named.
