In his first appearance at the MHSAA Individual State Finals, sophomore Chris Comito shot 164 (85,79) over the two-day, 36 hole tournament, finishing 13th in the field of 18. The top three individuals in each of the six regions qualify; the tournament was held at Grand Valley State University.
The second year varsity golfer qualified for the state finals by taking second at the Regional Tournament on May 31. Chris qualified, although the team did not, finishing fourth on a tie-breaker.
Assistant Varsity Golf Coach Mr. Dennis Koch said, “Chris had a tough first day and battled, but was better on Saturday. This was a good experience for him, and hopefully he can build on it and lead the team next year.”
Mr. Koch noted that at the State Team Finals, the top teams were familiar opponents. Grosse Pointe South won, after coming out of the region in first, and Seaholm finished third, also a regional competitor, beating the Pilots by one stroke in the tie-breaker to win a spot at the state tournament. During the CHSL dual-match season, the Pilots beat both Catholic Central, the fifth-place finisher, and Brother Rice, the seventh place finisher. Rice finished second in the region.
