Congratulations to junior Joe Zynda! Joe took 7th at the MHSAA Division 1 Track Field meet in the Discus event. His throw of 154’6″ exceeded his 134′ qualifying throw at the Regional Championships May 18. His All-State medal is a companion to his 2017 State Football Championship medal!

Joe was 13 feet behind the first place discus thrower at the state meet, and is confident that he can qualify again next year. His goal is to not only win the meet, but to break the school record of 175′, set by Ray Bruzos in 1994.

Track and Field Head Coach Mr. Dominic Reid was particularly enthusiastic about Joe’s accomplishment. “Joe has come a long way. His top throw sophomore year was 112′, and his hard work and perseverance paid off with his big improvement from regionals to the states.”

Mr. Reid notes that Joe is in line to receive an Academic All-State Medal, which will be announced later this month.

As for Joe, he carries a 3.87 and participates in the school’s Powerlifting Team; he placed at the state event this season. He’s an extremely talented athlete, but what truly sets him apart is the leadership he exhibits amongst his peers, as well as his unparallelled work ethic. He never takes days off, and attacks every practice and workout with everything he’s got. It really is exciting to see all of his accomplishments thus far, especially since he still has a full year left of competing at DLS.”

Joe is also a member of the football team, and begins summer varsity football workouts begin the week after exams. Joe is a guard, and plays both offense and defense.
