Congratulations to our DLS Mock Trial Team, winners of the 2016 Macomb County Regional Tournament, held March 5 at the Macomb County Circuit Court in Mt. Clemens.
With the win, the all senior team qualifies as one of ten teams in the State Finals in Lansing on March 19.
In 2015, in only its second year of competition, the DLS team finished as runners up.
Coaches of the team are DLS graduates Ben Aloia (’91) from Aloia & Associates, PC, and Kyle Kole (’06), from Lucido & Manzella, PC. DLS Counselor Mr. Jacob Jones is also a coach.
The trial involved an eccentric student defendant charged with terrorism and attempted murder for allegedly planting a bomb at his high school in an attempt to blow up a group of bullies. More details.
Aloia, who has worked with the team since its inception in 2014, says thg team practices intently, beginning in January for at least two hours, two days a week. In the final two weeks before the competition, the group meets every weekday, as well as the two Saturdays prior to the tournament. Despite the DLS day off on March 4, the group was at DLS all day for “intense practice.”
Although Aloia has two boys at St. Lawrence Grade School, he has chosen to put the time in as “my contribution to the school.” He says, “If I can dedicate my time to assist in these boys’ education and with such a challenging academic exercise, I know they will get a tremendous experience they can’t get in the classroom. This prepares them for the rigors of a college education in a different fashion. I think the kids enjoy the challenge.”
He says, “I’ve seen such amazing growth with the boys.”
Among the skills students learn, Aloia includes “extemporaneous speaking, logic and reasoning, the art of eloquence, voice projection, demeanor, facial expressions – all skills that will serve a student whether he becomes an attorney or a doctor of someone sitting in a board room.”
