MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Feb. 3, 2019) – De La Salle Collegiate only won two events in Saturday’s Macomb County Swimming and Diving Meet held at L’Anse Creuse North.

But that was enough for the Pilots to capture an unprecedented seventh straight county championship.

“We were expected to win, but we were going to have to earn it,” De La Salle coach Jim Singelyn said. “Everyone would need to step up and do their job.  “We no longer have the luxury of four All Americans at our disposal. They’re all swimming in college.”

Diving quadruplets Joey Basha, Justin Huttenlocher, Justin Burke and Alec Streberger helped pave the way for the Pilots’ latest county title. Their combined 64 points were more than eight different teams scored in Saturday’s meet.

“We have four divers that all competed at states last year,” Singelyn said. “We got a huge boost from them. After that (64 points) we had some separation from Dakota.”

Basha grabbed the top spot, winning the diving event with a combined score of 415.00. Huttenlocher came in second with 367.40; and Burke (306.55) and Streberger (292.60) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

The other big win came in the 200 medley relay when Max Swiatkowski, Sam Streberger, Daniel Talbot and Devon Baker beat Lakeview by .06 seconds, finishing with a time of 1:42.30.

The Pilots totaled 323 points, enough to out-distance Dakota (305), Chippewa Valley (280), Fraser (204), and L’Anse Creuse North (201).

Things got a little dicey when the Pilots’ 200 freestyle relay team was disqualified.

“I honestly have no clue what they were looking at, because my guys didn’t leave early,” Singelyn said. “(But) it actually got my guys fired up.”

With their outstanding performances, two Pilots qualified for the state meet. Seniors Daniel Talbot (100 Butterfly and 100 backstroke) and Daniel Gierlach (200 freestyle) will compete at the Division 2 State meet at Eastern Michigan University, March 8-9.

Over the past 10 years, the Pilots have produced eight All American, 45 All-State, 63 All-Catholic and over 100 All-County performances.

Here’s a list of other top-six finishes by Pilots’ swimmers: Daniel Gierlach, second, 200 freestyle (1:48.34); Max Swiatkowski, sixth, 200 freestyle (1:53.63); Juan DiCosmo, sixth, 200 IM (2:05.72); Devon Baker, second, 50 freestyle (23.32); Daniel Talbot, third, 100 butterfly (54.56); Juan DiCosmo, sixth, 100 butterfly (57.24); Daniel Gierlach, third, 100 freestyle (50.02); Max Swiatkowski, fifth, 500 freestyle (5:04.08); Daniel Talbot, third, 100 backstroke (57.13); Sam Streberger, fourth, 100 breaststroke (1:04.37); Devon Baker, fifth, 100 breaststroke (1:04.74); Max Swiatkowski, Sam Streberger, Daniel Talbot, Daniel Gierlach, third, 400 freestyle relay (3:25.13).
