Special Athletic Awards Announced

Congratulations to the following graduates of the Class of 2017 on being named recipients of these special athletic awards: (all quotes from Director of Athletics Mr. Mike Watson).

“Several schools may say that selecting their award winners is difficult. However, I’ve never been a part of a school with more outstanding student-athletes as De La Salle Collegiate. Being an outstanding athlete, student or leader is not a surprise, but a byproduct of work, dedication, and commitment here. Our special award winners set the pace for our underclassmen each year, and 2017 was no different. I look forward to watching the Class of 2018 and beyond compete to attempt to fill the shoes of those who preceded them.”

Br. Kevin Gilhooly Athlete of the Year Award: Allen Stritzinger
Presented to a student-athlete who has excelled in one or more sports.

“A two-way performer in football, Allen is known for his versatility and athleticism. He can play running back or wideout, safety, corner or specialist. Allen’s football skill earned him a scholarship to Syracuse, but I was most impressed with his desire to simply be the best athlete he could be. He became a respected contributor on the varsity basketball team because of his tenacity and desire. He rounded out his senior campaign by being one of the most dominant hurdlers in Michigan, earning all-state honors in both the low and high hurdles.”

Tony DeSantis Man of the Year Award: Jacob Huttenlocher
Presented to a student athlete who is an all-around student, and who has worked hard in and out of the classroom.

“The ideals that defined Coach DeSantis are alive in Jake Huttenlocher today. It’s easy to see that Jake is one of the finest swimmers in school history. He’s earned all-state status five times and was the Macomb County swimmer of the year this past season. As a captain, he helped lead the Pilots to a top-five state finish and was a contributing member of the 2016 state runner-up squad. What many may not see is that this Eagle Scout did all this and maintained a GPA over 4.0 in through rigorous two-a-day practices.”

Brother Robert Carnaghi Lasallian Spirit Award: Brendan Kraiza
Present to a student who is a dedicated supporter of his fellow Pilots.

“If you are looking for a student who exudes DLS pride and spirit, look no further than Brendan Kraiza. You can’t miss him in the Bro-Zone not just because of his size, but because he’s the loudest and most-spirited as well. You could see the same support at football, hockey, and basketball games as well as swim meets and baseball games. If the Pilots were competing, Brendan Kraiza was there.”

DLS Scholar Athlete Award: Brendan Sulkowski
Presented to a student-athlete who has excelled in the classroom and in his sport.

“I can’t think of anyone better to receive the scholar-athlete award than Brendan Sulkowski. Brendan is clearly one of the most outstanding students in the school academically. He is an outstanding track athlete in addition to his outstanding work in Campus Ministry.”

DLS Distinguished Athlete Award: Gregory Pine
Presented to a student athlete who has excelled in his sport.

“Greg Pine epitomizes what it means to be a Pilot. Not only did he extend his leadership to the ice to help the varsity win a state championship, he also helped lead the lacrosse team to a Regional title, scoring multiple goals in the championship. Beyond his athletic prowess and leadership abilities, Greg is an absolute standout in the classroom. I look forward to following his career.”

Coaches and staff members nominate young men for each award; a committee of administrators, staff, and coaches then reviews the nominations.
