WARREN, Mich. (March 29, 2019) – Nearly a dozen upperclassmen at De La Salle Collegiate will soon become volunteers at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit.

On Thursday, a group of 10 juniors and seniors attended an orientation with Cindy Boeneman, who heads volunteer services at St. John Hospital. These fine young men will soon begin volunteering four hours per week, assisting staff, patients, their families and visitors at the main hospital on Moross Road on the city’s east side.

Director of Alumni Relations Dennis Koch and anatomy and physiology teacher Laura Rigby – who have been facilitating this budding alliance – are excited that De La Salle students have been afforded this opportunity to serve while learning and making connections with medical professionals.

“I am always so proud to be associated with our students who continually impress me with their compassion and kindness,” Rigby said. “I believe that these boys will someday be a true blessing to their patients.”

Also attending Thursday’s orientation was Paxton, a three-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, who is a therapy dog at the hospital.

He was a “very good boy,” Rigby added.
