Fine Arts

fine arts

The Fine Arts Department of De La Salle Collegiate strives to give students the opportunity to grow in their understanding of themselves, of the world — and, ultimately, of God — by increasing their knowledge of the visual and performing arts as well as helping them experience the creation of art in the fields of music, theater, ceramics, painting, and drawing.

With a focus on theory and practice, the Fine Arts Department strives to instill in our students an awareness and appreciation of art's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit and yields self-sufficient learners with educated opinions.

WIG AND MASK SOCIETY

The Wig and Mask Society (WAMS) is the official drama club for De La Salle Collegiate. It is an extracurricular activity (meaning it meets after normal school hours) and is responsible for producing three theatrical performances each year: Fall Drama, Winter Musical and Spring One-Acts Festival. Female students from any high school are welcome to participate. Shows are run by a professional, adult staff, while the students serve as actors, dancer, chorus and ensemble, set crew, sound crew, lighting crew, staff assistance, box office, concessions, and raffle.

For more information or if you have any questions, please email WAMS Executive Director Kevin Fitzhenry or call him at 586-541-6210.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Marching Band plays at Ford Field in Detroit.

Welcome to one of the most successful programs at De La Salle Collegiate.

The De La Salle music program is a vital part of our high school and the community that we represent. The philosophy stated below defines our very existence. We are very proud of the success and accomplishments that our musicians have achieved. We have acquired a reputation and standards which we will continue in the future.

As part of the organization, it is each member’s responsibility to uphold the professionalism and pride that has become such an integral part and tradition in the De La Salle music and musical ensembles program. Through teamwork and self-sacrifice, we will continue to strive towards the goals we have set forth. Understanding your role as a member, whether being new or old, will greatly enhance your experience as a member of the music program. Together we work as one, towards the ultimate goal: bettering ourselves!

The De La Salle-Regina music program continues to grow and each school year we expect to be even larger. The marching band has participated in the Harper Woods Band-O-Rama, Grosse Pointe Thanksgiving Parade, St. Clair Shores Memorial Day Parade, Wayne State University Prep Kick-off Classic, and Marching Band Festival, in which we have consistently earned First Division “ONE” superior ratings. The De La Salle music staff is looking forward to working with the students to put together the best show possible.

GENERAL INFORMATIONThe following questions and answers are meant to give students and parents important information to the marching band, show choir and band camp programs at De La Salle and Regina High School. We hope you find this information helpful. If you have any questions, please email us. The more involved you are, the more informed you will be.

WHO CAN BE IN THE MARCHING BAND?All concert band members automatically earn a spot in the marching band. Beginning band members (freshmen) can volunteer to participate in the marching band.

WHAT DOES THE MARCHING BAND DO? The De La Salle marching band is the most visible part of our band program. During the fall, our marching band performs at all home football games and at several local parades, homecoming, school assemblies, marching competitions, invitationals, and holiday parades. In the spring, the marching band may travel to other special parades and events around Michigan.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES THE MARCHING BAND TAKE?The marching band attends a three-day, pre-camp in late July or early August and then a one-week camp the following week to prepare for the fall marching season. The one-week camp may be home at De La Salle or at a camp in southeastern Michigan. There is a fee to cover the cost of the camp. Details on camp costs are communicated once the format and location are finalized in late spring or early summer. The marching band camp is mandatory for all marching band members. The bulk of work is accomplished at away band camp and gives band members the needed time to prepare for the fall marching season.

After away band camp, marching rehearsals begin on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout August. Once school starts, the marching band rehearses after school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Specific times will be communicated prior to the start of the school year.

The band performs at all varsity home football games, which are usually four or five games per season, one or two parades, and the Marching Band Festival in mid-October. Additional marching band performances are announced well in advance of the scheduled date and vary each year. Rehearsals and performances are mandatory for all marching band members. Any special performances are scheduled far in advance and students are given as much notice as possible.

WHAT IS SHOW CHOIR?Show choir is a talented group of students from De La Salle and Regina that get together to sing, dance, and create memorable performances. High-energy vocals are combined with a variety of choreography to bring all kinds of music, from Broadway to jazz to current pop, to life on the stage. Being a part of the show choir promotes teamwork and creativity. Evening practices are held twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 7-9 p.m. The show choir performs at the Christmas and spring concerts, as well as many other events, including Pasta Fest, Welcome Tea, elementary school concerts, Christmas caroling, and more.
