WARREN, Mich. (March 27, 2019) – It was a valiant effort on the hardwood Wednesday morning.
Unfortunately, Jelly Fam – a team made up of juniors – came up short against a determined team of teachers in the annual Purple Division IM Basketball championship in the Bill Fox Gymnasium.
Led by science teacher Rob Black, who finished with 19 points, The Profs rolled in the second half en route to a 48-34 victory before an excited lunchtime crowd.
Missing two key players – Aaron Wladischkin and Steve Schypinski – the Profs got their act together in the second of two 15-minute halves.
The game entered the intermission tied at 26-26. But The Profs quickly opened a double-digit lead, 38-28, when Black hit a put-back basket.
Six of the seven Profs scored, including math teacher Joe Novak (14 points, 5 assists) and social studies teacher Andrew Grauzer (9 points, 3 assists). Steve Laudicina scored four points and Jacob Creeden and Andrew Campbell added one point each.
Sean Bonery hit three three-pointers and finished with 14 points to lead Jelly Fam.
Creeden was a definite fan favorite Wednesday.
Sporting a Chauncy Billups jersey, Creeden channeled a Mr. Big Shot moment, canning a shot from beyond mid-court after time ran out. The shot sent hundreds of frenzied students streaming onto the court as The Profs celebrated their championship.
